Optima Turn — Automated Lateral Rotation Therapy

Enhanced Pressure Injury Prevention

The Optima Turn automates lateral rotation to reduce prolonged pressure on vulnerable areas, providing consistent, effective prevention for high-risk patients.

Improved Blood Circulation

Gentle, automatic turning cycles stimulate skin activity and encourage healthy blood flow, promoting overall tissue health and comfort during recovery.

Reduced Caregiver Strain

The system minimizes manual repositioning frequency, reducing caregiver workload and enhancing safety and efficiency during daily care routines.

Comfortable Rhythmic Turning

Designed for patient comfort, the Optima Turn provides smooth, rhythmic lateral movements that maintain stability and relaxation throughout each cycle.

According to international clinical guidelines, patients should be repositioned every 2–4 hours to prevent the development of pressure injuries (PIs). The EPUAP/NPUAP/PPPIA recommends that turning patients to a 30° lateral position significantly reduces the risk of pressure injuries compared to the traditional 90° position. However, frequent manual repositioning can be strenuous and time-consuming — with studies showing that over 61% of nurses experience back pain due to repetitive patient handling and bed transfers.¹,²

The Optima Turn simplifies repositioning by integrating an automatic turning function within its alternating pressure system. This intelligent design enables continuous, controlled lateral movement, promoting pressure redistribution and skin protection without interrupting the caregiver’s workflow.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) – Wellell Optima Turn Alternating Pressure System

What are the advantages of using Optima Turn? +
The Wellell Optima Turn provides multiple clinical and caregiving benefits:
  • Reduces caregiver workload and saves handling time
  • Relieves pressure on the hips, sacrum, trochanters, and heels
  • Provides comfort, stability, and customizable support
  • Minimizes caregiver strain and risk of injury during repositioning
  • Assists in safe patient turning and mobility enhancement
  • Allows adjustable pressure settings tailored to individual needs
  • Maintains pressure relief even during transport or power interruptions
  • Promotes active recovery with inflated seating that prevents bottoming out
When the patients are turned, won’t they risk falling off the bed? +
No. The Optima Turn includes protective side bolsters that prevent the patient from sliding or pressing against the side rails. These bolsters enhance comfort and stability by providing gentle lateral support during each turning cycle.
How does Optima Turn increase comfort when patients are turned on their sides? +
The Optima Turn mattress delivers continuous alternating pressure therapy while side bolsters support the patient’s posture. Individual deflatable air cells allow caregivers to customize heel relief care. This eliminates the need for manual repositioning or foam wedges, reducing caregiver strain and improving patient comfort.
What types of patients benefit from using Optima Turn? +
Optima Turn is designed for patients who are:
  • Unconscious or unresponsive
  • Bedbound or immobilized
  • At medium to high risk of developing pressure injuries, particularly on the scapulae and greater trochanters
What care settings is Optima Turn suited for? +
The system is ideal for use in:
  • ICU and GICU units
  • NICU, Neurosurgery, and Neurology departments
  • Long-term care and rehabilitation facilities
After powering on Optima Turn, what pressure setting will it be set to? +
Upon startup, the Optima Turn automatically inflates to maximum firmness. Once inflation completes, caregivers can select between continuous low pressure or alternating pressure modes. If no mode is chosen within 10 minutes, the pump defaults to alternating pressure mode.
How long does it take to change between left and right turns? +
Changing direction takes approximately 3–5 minutes, depending on the patient’s BMI and body contour. Heavier patients may require slightly longer. The dwell time begins once the mattress reaches the selected turn angle.
Can the alternating pressure mode be deactivated when the patient is turned? +
No. The alternating pressure mode remains active during turning cycles by default to ensure continuous pressure redistribution and patient protection.
What materials are the air cells made from? +
All air cells are made from Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU), a durable, flexible, and quiet material that resists moisture breakdown (hydrolysis) and minimizes friction during patient movement.
What does “cell-in-cell” air cell design mean, and what are its benefits? +
The cell-in-cell design encapsulates a firm inner cell within a softer outer cell, providing enhanced firmness, support, and stability. This feature—used in Wellell’s Optima Series including the Optima Prone—improves comfort in the sacrum area during sitting, transfers, and entry or exit from the bed.
